The District 5 bowling tournament was held at AMF Fairlanes in Casselberry
on Tuesday, November 7. This year’s tournament was structured differently
than in the past. The morning session had all teams bowling three 10-pin
games. The top four teams then entered the afternoon session using the Baker
system with double elimination.

BOY'S TEAM:
The boys began
the morning with a 920 game and found themselves in third place. After
a 922 game in the second round and an 896 in the third round, the boys
ended the morning in second place behind West Orange. Jon Ladines ended
the morning session in fourth place overall with a 587 series. Cory
Mullica was 6th overall with a 579 series.
The boys began
the afternoon in an exciting match against Bishop Moore, who was in
third place. After exchanging points through the first four games, the
boys won the third point needed to advance on the winner’s bracket.
They faced the number one team, West Orange, in the second round. The
Darters quickly won the three points necessary to advance to the final
round while West Orange, because of their loss, had to face Bishop Moore
on the loser’s side.
Although West
Orange won their match in the next round, they forfeited to Apopka because
of an injury to one of their bowlers. With the first place finish, the
boys advance to the state tournament to be held at Boardwalk Tuesday
and Wednesday of next week.

COACH'S COMMENTS:
I was extremely proud of
the effort put forth by the boys. We lost Chris Zugelder in the last
game of the morning session with an injury, but they pulled together
to advance through the afternoon and take first place. Last year we
lost to West Orange, so it was nice to come out on top this year.

GIRL'S TEAM:
The girls ended their season
at the tournament as they failed to advance to the state tournament.
They began the morning session in first place with a 799 series in the
first game. After the second and third round, they fell two pins shy
of Winter Park’s score and ended the morning in second place.
The afternoon session found
the Darters facing Colonial. After losing the first game to Colonial,
the girls won the next three games to advance in the winner’s
bracket. In the second round, they faced Winter Park, who began with
a strong 212 and 187 game to take the first two points. The Darters
rallied to take the third game, but fell short in the fourth game, which
put them in the loser’s bracket.
In the third round, the
girls faced Colonial again. The Darters took the first game but lost
the next three games.
Christina Cardello, who
had the third highest score in the first round with a 499, took first
place as an individual qualifier and will compete at the state tournament.
Ashley Preston, rolling a 485, ended up 6th overall. Ashley Kleier,
with a 482, ended up in 8th place.

COACH'S COMMENTS:
We seemed to run out of
energy and had problems closing. The more problems we had, the more
we lost our confidence. If you don’t make the spares and strikes,
the only way you can win is if the other team is also failing to close.
However, Colonial was getting the necessary marks to overtake us.
