Freedom |
The Apopka High varsity bowling teams traveled to Sky Bowl on Tuesday, October 17, to take on the Freedom team. The girls team began the match with a comfortable lead, outscoring Freedom in the first game 678 to 549. Both teams increased their scores for the next two games as the Lady Darters finished the match with a 2113 to 1766 win. Jenna Cardenas led the girls with a 481 series and the high game of 194. Christina Cardello had a nice series as well, including a 173 game. The boys also won their
match 2756 to 2603. The first game found the boys just one pin shy
of a 1000 series. The scores fell with each game. The last game was
very exciting as one of Freedom’s bowlers rolled a 266 while
Apopka’s bowling scores fell. But the lead that had been built
was enough to carry them through for the victory. Justin Bacon had
an outstanding day as he began the match with a 223 and ended with
a 621 series. Cory Mullica was one pin shy of a 600 series and had
the most consistent scores. |
Coaches Comments:Boys Varsity: Our scores were just what I had hoped for in the first game, but as the lanes began to break down, so did our scores. Only Cory was able to increase his score in the last game, while the rest of the team shot lower scores. We had some problems with the approaches and ended up fouling a few times, which really hurt our scores. I was very proud of the job that Justin did as he had an outstanding day, shooting lots of strikes, including a string of seven strikes in his first game. Girls Varsity: We had some trouble with the lanes as we were not used to the drier conditions, which affected our spare shooting. Our scores were not as high as what we normally bowl, but we were happy to secure the victory as it insured that we would finish in second place in the Metro. Timber Creek has a very good squad and has won all of their matches while we lost one match to Winter Park, putting us in second place. |
Dr. Phillips |
| On Thursday, the Apopka High bowlers defeated the Dr. Phillips team 2867 to 2501. The Apopka team rolled a 995 series in the first game of the match to create a comfortable lead and the opportunity to make substitutions to allow all bowlers a chance to roll at least one game. The second game of the match saw the scores drop, with a 909 total. The final game showed the scores rise again with two bowlers rolling over 200. Shaun Barnett, who entered in the second game, rolled a nice 213 game, earning his right to stay in for the final game of the match. Daniel Mimm had his first game as a varsity bowler, rolling a very respectable 180 game. Justin Bacon had the high game with a 216. Cory Mullica had the high series at 613. The varsity girls won by
default as Dr. Phillips did not bring their varsity team. |
Coaches Comments:Boys Varsity: Our boys were on target in the first game, so the decision to pull them met with some resistance. However, I wanted all bowlers to have a chance to participate in this match. We kept the pressure on throughout the entire series, maintaining nice scores, and the subs did a great job of keeping up the pace. |
